One Room Challenge – Week 2

We are in week 2 of the one room challenge and we have made a lot of progress!

Go check out the One Room Challenge Blog here. There are so many talented designers participating this fall.

Last week we found thin brick that we are going to use but, unfortunately, we did not have enough to do the entire accent wall I was hoping to do.

Our options (and their downfalls) were:

  • Only do a portion of the wall and stop where the loft opening on the adjacent wall started – This would make the room feel shorter
  • Order more of the thin brick from the manufacturer – The quarry said they would need to cut it and it would be 6-8 weeks
  • Use a coordinating thin brick and integrate the two – All local thin brick is expensive and each brand has a slightly different dimension
  • Use a different wall treatment for the remainder of the wall – This could look terrible

After much debate, we decided to attempt to add a secondary wall treatment to the wall. The treatment we chose was Board and Batten. We are still going to have to find 5 or 6 more boxes of thin brick but the Board and Batten should fill the void nicely…we hope. I was not able to find a lot of ‘inspiration’ pictures for this combination so here’s hoping.

There are so many different ways to do board and batten, we struggled deciding which one to do. Ultimately, we landed on simple design with a tall header. We wanted the header to be large as we were hoping it would not disappear in this large two story room. We will be adding a quarter round to the base after painting. This will allow us to cover up any small painting drips.

We also opted to wrap the board and batten around to the other wall as it would make the room more cohesive.

In hindsight, I would have done the header one inch smaller than the footer as I was not thinking about the fact that the quarter round makes the baseboard look small than it is. We also may add some embellishments later but for now, I am happy with the result.

See you next week!

Ann
